Meet a memorable man with a Micro-fluidic vision

Dave has been recognized by the Guinness book for his memory, now has his mind - and money on micro-fluidics.

Dave Farrow admits he's taken a "roundabout" journey from breaking records to making small tech, but he's getting up to speed. The former Guinness record holder for memorizing the most playing cards - 2,704 with only six errors - is the founder and majority shareholder of Accella Scientific Inc. a Toronto based business developing handheld, first-response diagnostic devices for HIV and other viruses.

Farrow, who leads classes and seminars on memory and focus techniques, said he came up with the idea while teaching university students. Several were working in biology and chemistry, and it rekindled a life-long fascination with science - and led to a long mission to understand micro- and nano-technology.

He began to research lab-on-a-chip at a rapid-clip - appropriate for a man who say he can read 800 to 900 words a minute. He came up with what he believes is a superior method of separating a virus from the sample. As he envisions it, his disposable cartridge-based system could provide a more rapid and accurate test for HIV and a Tool to determine the effectiveness of drug treatments for AIDS patients.

So what does he see in the future? A simple, direct test that could replace today's diagnostic tools. The U.S. patent he filed includes language that could lead to a one-time home use version.
